  1. Part of a simultaneous launch of three large LCD monitors is the 22″ Acer AL2216W – a new member of Acer’s budget Value Line.

With a native resolution of 1680×1050, a 5ms true response time (since Acer’s website does not list it as a grey-to-grey value) and a 700:1 contrast ratio, the AL2216W is definitely a solid piece of work by Acer. Add in analogue D-sub and DVI inputs (TrustedReviews says the AL2216W doesn’t have DVI, but Acer’s website seems to state otherwise) and you have a screen with a lot of potential – especially given Acer’s generous price points for its Value Line.

But “potential” is all the AL2216W has at the moment since Acer has yet to reveal any pricing information on the LCD screen. Worse still is the fact that Acer has announced that this version of the AL2216W will be replaced by a HDCP-enabled one a few months down the road. You might think Acer’s telling us not to touch the AL2216W until its newer incarnation surfaces…

  2. Remember the 22″ Acer AL2216W LCD monitor announced last month? Well, no surprise if you don’t because barely any information had surfaced then, but no excuses now because it has officially been launched in the US – at a recommended price of US$399.

A few things have been clarified since the earlier announcement. One: The AL2216W does come with DVI-input (some had been speculating that it would not). Two: It’s priced right at US$399. MobileWhack quoted a whopping 70,000 yen (~US$600) a few weeks back, and some thought that its Japanese price would reflect its price stateside.

But there is one thing that will definitely nag potential buyers. Last month when the AL2216W was first announced, Acer stated clearly that it would be replaced a few months down the road with a HDCP-enabled version. The recent press release said nothing about this, so I would expect that Acer’s previous announcement still holds – especially since it didn’t quote the AL2216W having HDCP-support.

    Wait? Yeah, I’d think so.
