Acer Revamps Notebook Strategy

Acer finalized its 2006 product roadmap recently, “…with a significant change in the look of its mainstream and entry-level notebooks.” It has also announced that it will enhance its desktop contract relationship with Foxconn Electronics (a.k.a Hon Hai Precision Industry) - the same company that produces PCs for Dell and Hewlett Packard (HP) for some of their regional markets (e.g. India, Middle East, etc.).

The enhanced relationship will probably entail:

Foxconn’s new Indian plant will help fulfill Acer’s desktop shipment goals of six million units for this year and 10 million in 2007.

More interestingly, Digitimes reports that Acer chairman J.T. Wang said that “Acer’s performance should not be judged on par with Dell…” and that “Acer still has a long way to catch up with the US vendor…” in the wake of Dell’s statement that it was taking competition from Acer seriously. Of course, I presume that the short term fall in Acer’s share price during the recent Chinese New Year period after Dell CEO Kevin Rollin’s “pronouncement” was a key reason for Mr. Wang’s statements.
