Marketed as a (semi) desktop replacement notebook alongside the Travelmate 6492, this 15.4″ laptop isn’t the lightest on the block at an average weight of 2.9kg. But it does pack quite a punch with its 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X2300-HD (up to 896MB if supplemented by your system RAM) graphics card, 1.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and max. 4GB DDR2 RAM.

ZDNet UK takes a look at it and awards a 7/10 rating, plus the conclusion that: “This is an affordable notebook that should suit anyone looking for a capable, mostly desk-bound, system. Although it’s fairly basic, the webcam is a nice extra, while fingerprint recognition is fast becoming a ‘must have’ feature for business users.”

When Acer first announced that it would be equipping its newer laptops with 3G wireless capability via the HSDPA standard, the models for two notebooks were revealed: Acer Aspire 5650 and Aspire TravelMate 4260. The former has already been reviewed, while the latter will soon be – at least, according to a Crave at CNET blog post.

The TM4260 will come with a 15″ screen, a 1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor, a 80GB hard disk drive, and of course, a 3G SIM card which allows you high-speed wireless connectivity in any region with a GSM network.

It’s a pity, however, that it is priced rather exorbitantly at around £1,000 (~US$1,890) – though UK prices are generally a notch or two higher than those state-side.

In case any of you are wondering, this isn’t the first review we’ve featured on the Acer TravelMate 4060, but it is the first under the 4060-moniker since the rest were filed under the more specific name of TravelMate 4062WLCi.

Anyway, back to the review by Laptop Magazine. For starters, the 15.4″ Pentium M 1.73GHz notebook gets a thumb up for office productivity and basic multimedia playback, but not for multimedia creation or gaming given its relatively low 3dMark03 score of 1080.

Overall, the TravelMate 4060 scores a solid rating of 3.5 out of 5, with the following verdict: “The TravelMate 4060 is a solid business performer, but its short battery life prevents us from recommending it to road warriors. For home or office users, however, this system is a solid value.”

Besides the all-white Acer TravelMate 3020, two other Europe-only notebooks were recently introduced. The first being the subject of this post, the TravelMate 2450.

The TM2450 is unmistakably for the budget-conscious given that it’s powered by an Intel Celeron M 1.46GHz processor. But other than that, you’re looking at quite a well-rounded notebook. With a minimum of 512MB DDR2 RAM, a 60GB 5400RPM HDD, and integrated ATI Radeon X200M graphics, you can rest assured that MS Word won’t take minutes to load.

Uniquely, the 2450 comes with a choice between two screen sizes, either 15″ or 15.4″ – with a natural resolution of 1024×768 for the former and 1280 x 800 for the latter. I’m not sure why such choice was necessary, but if Acer felt like going the “extra mile”, who are we to complain?

I hope you guys still remember the all-white Acer TravelMate 3020 that was previewed two to three months back because that very notebook has finally been launched officially in Europe.

For those who have forgotten, some of the key features of this model include its light weight (at only 1.5kg), small dimensions (i.e. “A4 sheet”), Acer GraviSense technology (anti-shock technology) and 12.1″ WXGA LCD screen. Acer also managed to squeeze in its 1.3 megapixel Acer OrbiCam as well, and you have the option of equipping the model with a Bluetooth VOIP phone to round up the 3020’s strong connectivity (tri-mode Wi-Fi, i.e. a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0).

Weirdly, Acer didn’t provide pricing details in its latest press release – even though prior rumors put the TM3020 at US$1770. And to think that price will probably be the main reason why most tech-savvy consumers would want to purchase Acer’s all-white ultraportable (remember the MacBook…).

CRN has just published a review of a few media center notebooks from the industry’s bigger players, not unlike PC Magazine’s own review roundup a while back. However, while PC Magazine’s review didn’t include a single Acer notebook, CRN’s own features the award-winning Acer TravelMate 8200.

A overall conclusion or ranking isn’t included, but based on what was said about the 8200, it’s clear that it was as impressive as it has been with all its prior reviewers.

Just a short excerpt:

One feature that stood out with the Acer unit is that it performs extremely fast no matter the task. CRN engineers were surprised to see how responsive it was when simultaneously using many of the preinstalled multimedia applications.

Of course, now that humungo-sized HD-DVD-enabled notebooks are out in the open, you might very well prefer the 17″ Aspire 9510.

If you thought you could escape with just four reviews on the Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi, you were sorely mistaken. PC Advisor comes in with the fifth full review (at least, on this blog) of the desktop replacement notebook, and concludes with a high build quality rating of 9 out of 10, and an equally positive features rating of 8 out of 10.

It adds nothing much to the discussion, so let’s skip ahead to the conclusion, which is that “…the TravelMate is a quality laptop – it’s fast and well built, and the battery life is decent. The graphics are good and attention has been paid to design details and build quality. But it’s not cheap.” Of course, given their last sentence, it shouldn’t be surprising that they awarded a mere 6 out of 10 for the TM8204WLMi’s value for money rating.

However, it should be surprising that they were actually concerned about the TravelMate 8204’s price at all given the performance value you’d get from it. At least, none of the prior reviews had any problem with the 8204’s price. But then, we are talking about UK prices here…

Though the Acer TravelMate 8204WLMi has somewhat been replaced in spirit by the Ferrari 5000 revealed earlier this month, there’s little doubt that it’s one solid notebook – at least, from the three reviews, and multiple comparisons we’ve seen so far.

Today, we have yet another review on the 8204WLMi, and this time its by PC World Canada. While I feel that its little more than a summary, and some opinion on readily available technical specifications, you might be interested in their conclusion, which is that, “This 15.4-inch laptop (the TM8204WLMi) turned in solid WorldBench 5 performance, but its battery life was so-so.”

Other than that, I suggest reading more detailed reviews, such as this one by TrustedReviews.
