Here’s yet another review on the 12.1″ Acer TravelMate 3010 ultraportable notebookthis time by CNET Australia.

For those who have forgotten about this tiny gem in the wake of the all the fuss surrounding the upcoming 12.1″ Acer Ferrari 1000 ultraportable, the 3012WTMi is a solid 1.5kg notebook, powered by a 1.66GHz Core Duo processor, at least 512MB of RAM and a 80GB or 100GB hard disk drive. However, like most ultraportables, it ships with integrated graphics.

Of course, integrated graphics should be the last on your list of needs if you’re looking for an ultraportable, so it shouldn’t be surprising that CNET’s bottom line is an excellent overall rating of 8.5 out of 10 plus a short and simple, yet undeniably positive piece of praise: “Acer’s cheap and cheerful thin-and-light feels more like a high-end offering thanks to its stellar performance and battery life.”

Acer TravelMate 4202WLMi Review

The Core Duo-powered Acer TravelMate 4202WLMi gets reviewed by PCMag, but is only awarded an above average 3 out of 5 overall rating, which in my opinion, screams the fact that this TravelMate is good, but just not good enough.

With a 1.67 GHz Core Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, 100GBs of hard disk space, and only a $1,099 price tag, it’s clear that the TravelMate 4202WLMi would always have been a strong offering from Acer. But specs aren’t everything, and it’s that “extras” the left the 4020WLMi in mediocrity.

The reviewer’s conclusion pretty much supports this as well, with her saying that, “…it won’t win you over with its design or any extensive features, but its power and price tag will catch your attention.”

PCMag had the first review of the Acer Travelmate 4062WLCi, so it isn’t really surprising to see it featuring the Travelmate 4062WLCi as one of the its top choices for sub-$1000 notebooks.

Little was actually said about the 4062WLCi, but unlike a couple of the other notebooks featured, it was all positive comments for the Acer. The 4062WLCI was said to be, “…a budget notebook with plenty of viewing space and nice amount of storage capacity. ”

The other sub-$1000 notebooks featured were the Dell Inspiron 6000, Lenovo 3000 C100, and HP Compaq V2000Z.

Desktop Replacements: A Comparison

PCWorld.com recently ran a cross-brand comparison between the top “desktop killer” notebooks on the market, not unlike in style to PCMag’s recent media center notebook comparison.

Among the desktop replacement notebooks featured were the HP Pavilion dv8000z, Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600, the HP Compaq nx9420, the Acer Aspire AS9504WSMi, and the Acer TravelMate 8200.

Although my personal choice would be an Acer TravelMate 8200 due to its strong performance and revamped Acer style, it seems that the HP Pavilion dv8000z was just too good – taking top spot with an overall rating of 85. At second place, also with a rating of 85, was the Toshiba Qosmio G35-AV600. And at third place was the HP Compaq nx9420 with a rating of 83. The Acer Aspire 9504WSMi took fourth while the Acer TravelMate 8200 took fifth place with ratings of 83 and 81, respectively.

We didn’t have any specs to discuss when Acer gave a preview of the Acer TravelMate 3020 a month back. We did know it was white though.

Anyway, it seems that the TM3020 is a 12.1-inch ultraportable, primarily targeted at female consumers. But despite its target market, the notebook comes with up to a 2.16GHz Core Duo processor and 120GB hard disk drive. And like the rest of Acer’s dual core offerings, the TravelMate 3020 will come equipped with a 1.3-megapixel camera and A/B/G wireless support. Of course, the main draw will be the 3.3 pound weight.

A basic configuration will be sold at US$1770.

Apple Macbook Pro vs. Acer TravelMate 8200 Prizefight

You might be dead bored of Mac vs. PC comparisons already, but reviewers are definitely not. Why? Because we have with us today yet another MacBook Pro vs. Acer TravelMate 8200 comparison, but this time from CNET.

CNET puts both notebooks through an 8-round battle, with design, display, features and performance among the criteria used. In the end, while both notebooks put up a great fight, the TravelMate 8200 managed to edge out the MacBook Pro by 1 round. The MacBook won in design, display and software, while the TM8200 won in features, performance, battery life and price.

Inevitably, Mac lovers have hammered the review, attesting that not every category can be judged equally, e.g. Apple’s win in software should be far more significant compared to Acer’s win in price. Indeed, there is some truth in that, given that the MacBook comes bundled with hundreds of dollars of excellent software (compared to just Windows on the TM8200).

Therefore, even after the whole process of comparison, most would find themselves back at square one: Which goddamned notebook is better?

Acer TravelMate 3012WTMi Review

Okay, so we’ve had two TravelMate 3012TMi reviews and one on the 3012WMi already. But there’s really no harm having one on the 3012WTMi as well, right?

Anyway, what we have with us today is actually a NotebookReview.com review of the Acer TravelMate 3012WTMI – one of the earliest dual core-powered ultraportables.

The reviewer found that the laptop was not only small and lightweight, but also one with terrific performance. Only the lack of proper webcam functionality with Skype and some disatisfaction with the notebook’s battery life bogged the 3012WTMi down.

Ultimately, the review is a favourable one for the Acer – just like the rest of the reviews on the Acer TM3012 series.

We’ve had two TravelMate 3012TMi reviews already, so it’s high time we had one on its sister: The Acer TravelMate 3012WMi. T3 tries to fulfill this task with a short TM3012WMi review in its April edition.

T3 highlighted the sheer dual-core power and competitive price of the 3012WMi as pluses, but just like the reviewers of the TM3012TMi, they didn’t find the poor battery life and average screen satisfactory. Overall, the TM3012WMi was awarded 3 out of 5 stars, plus a short and sweet conclusion: “Not a winner here, then, but this is still a powerful option for those who don’t stray too far from a mains socket.”
